Celebrating Partnerships – Ambassador Janet Garvey Visits the Adamawa and North Provinces of Cameroon

Ambassador Janet Garvey visited Cameroon’s Adamawa and North provinces from May 26 – 30, 2008.  In Adamawa, Ambassador Garvey met 40 young English language students at the Ngaoundere municipal library; visited the health center and discussed health and education matters with women groups that work with a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tourningal, about 60 kilometers from Ngaoundere; met Ngaoundere’s three newly elected Mayors; and met with the Fulbright Alumni Association.  She also met the Lamido of Ngaoundere who dazzled her with a wonderful Fantasia.

In Ambassador Garvey’s second visit to the North province, she presided over the inauguration of a fourteen-station computer laboratory at the government high school of Gashiga with the Governor and Lamidos.  Additionally, she launched a 30-photo exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cameroon at the Garoua American Corner, located in the municipal library.

Ambassador Garvey also had meetings with government, traditional leaders, and religious leaders in both provinces to acquaint herself with the social, political, and religious realities and discuss possibilities of enhanced partnerships.

Her visit also provided her the opportunity to appreciate some of the fascinating tourist sites of the region, including the Benoue National Park, the Ngaoundaba Ranch, the Vina falls, and Lake Tison. (photo gallery)
