Dedication/Naming of the Information Resource Center (IRC)

June 26, 2008

Ambassador Janet Garvey presided over the dedication/naming of the Information Resource Center (IRC) on June 26, 2008. Ninety participants attended the ceremony, including former Ambassador Frances D. Cook, high-level Cameroon government officials, ambassadors of other diplomatic missions and heads of international organizations in Yaounde, as well as
university lecturers, researchers, and high-level target audiences from various professions. During Ambassador Janet Garvey’s address, she acknowledged those who took part in the naming of the IRC.  Ambassador Garvey and former Ambassador Cook unveiled a photo of James Baldwin and a plaque bearing his name.  The Ambassador then led participants of the newly decorated James Baldwin IRC.  This was an excellent opportunity to promote the America.gov and Embassy sites by widely distributing bookmarks and other promotional materials.

In Yaounde, the IRC is a key place for finding information on subjects relating to the goals of Public Diplomacy: democracy, human rights, free market economy, free and fair elections, HIV/AIDS, etc. The dedication ceremony helped promote IRC’s resources to many old and new users in Yaounde and all over the country. The event received extensive media coverage.  Ambassadors Garvey and Cook granted two interviews each to radios and
televisions.
